ABOUT THE FILMMAKER
Alex’s debut film “Word Is Bond” was inspired through close collaboration with LGBTQ rappers of color who lent the necessary authenticity to the struggle her film highlights. Raised in South Florida, Alex Mastoon draws unique inspiration from her obsession with the magical spectra of colors and sound. At a young age, she cultivated a special curiosity for storytelling through love of films by her heroes, Michel Gondry and Jonathan Glazer; 90’s music videos and 70’s video art from her childhood helped round out her early aesthetic. The self-taught Writer/Director quickly went from inking ideas in spiral notebooks to blockbuster production management, indie film art decoration, location scouting, and directing and editing her own works. Outside of working in the industry, Alex manages and teaches for non profits around California focusing on the LGBTQ community, homelessness, and abused children.
